The Gardens & Our Head Gardener

The garden at the Hospital is an area if about 2 acres and forms a significant green space in the town. We know it has been cultivated at least since the Hospital's foundation when each resident was allowed a plot with the intention being that they would grow much of their own food. The garden continues to be an important amenity for our residents today.
Sexey’s soil is easily worked, fertile-yet-hungry, with a south-facing aspect; an ideal spot for wildlife-friendly edible gardening. It is managed organically and contains an orchard, soft fruits, vegetables, shrubs and herbaceous borders. Raised beds to encourage participation of residents were recently added. The produce grown is changed periodically to reflect the wishes of residents and to better suit the climate Surplus produce is made available to local people through an "honesty table" at the main gates and donations allow for additional planting. As the gardener there is a sense of responsibility to not just maintain what is here but also to improve and enhance the garden going forward so that it is not only productive but colourful as well. . |
